| This young Vietnamese boy has a large brain tumor that, untreated, will lead to the loss of sight in his left eye. Neurosurgeons serving Central Vietnam cannot operate on many relatively young patients like him due to a lack of modern neurosurgical tools. Without the appropriate instruments and an operative microscope, the local neurosurgeons were only able to biopsy his tumor. About AMCANI The mission of Americare Neurosurgery International (AMCANI) is to save and enhance the quality of life for this patient and those like him by promoting locally sustainable, modern neurosurgical care in developing countries. Modern neurosurgery requires expensive capital equipment that frequently cannot be afforded in developing countries. At the same time, hospitals in the US retire equipment that is still viable for medical practice. For example, the operative microscope is a defining element of modern neurosurgery, lasts for years, and requires only low cost maintenance items such as light bulb changes. Delivery of a retired operative microscope to a competent neurosurgeon in a developing country can revolutionize his medical practice. AMCANI aims to recycle durable equipment that has minimal overhead, and to accompany that equipment with training in the neurosurgical techniques it enables and the post-operative care required by more complex procedures. This model, with your support, will benefit thousands of patients throughout the developing world as well as minimize the waste in our own medical system. |
